This page is the archive of Reunion News before the Sheraton West Tower was chosen:

The mid-October date was selected in anticipation that this would be the weekend of either the Homecoming game or the Saints-Uni game (neither is designated until the summer, but this is a good bet in either case). Saturday evening is planned for the event after the friday night game (whoever the opponent), leaving Sunday for an informal brunch if held at either of the hotel locations.

We anticipated that many spouses may not wish to or be able to attend, so the event is being planned around a buffet with background entertainment, leaving time to gather, renew old friendships and catch up on classmate activities.

The reunion committee is currently choosing a site from one of these three which follow. Click here to go directly to the Safari Journal of the committee's road-trip adventure to visit these locales, or go to the link at the bottom of the page:

SAN DIEGO

For those who have not been to San Diego in the last several years, there has been much change in the entertainment and hotel scene. If you have not been back in more than a decade, you may really be surprised! The Gaslamp Quarter (Fifth Avenue to the harbor) not only was renovated twenty years ago with the addition of Horton Plaza Shopping Center, but has undergone a major expansion in the last few years with the anticipation of the new Padres Ballpark, to be located near Tenth & Imperial. As the local music scene, with the latest haute-cuisine restaurants, the Gaslamp is the place to be at night.

The Seaport Village shopping area went up at the old ferry landing also about twenty years ago, the San Diego Trolley now serves the Stadium, Old Town, and points along the harbor (soon to be extended up Mission Valley to SDSU and connect at La Mesa for the El Cajon line).

The Zoo has also undergone several facelifts: Tiger River, Heart of the Zoo, Stanley's, Ituri Forest and Polar Bear Plunge. Plans are in the works to expand into the current parking area with new exhibits. The Wild Animal Park has also added new exhibits, there's even a LegoLand in Carlsbad.

Sea World has had a complete makeover since Anheiser-Busch took over: Rocky Point Preserve, Manatee Rescue, Wild Arctic (a simulation ride ala Star Tours), Shipwreck Rapids (a soak-you raft ride), and food galore! Yes, in keeping with the 'education' theme of the park (in order to get the City Council to make zoning concessions) there's even a 'Beer School', which is where they keep the Clydesdales.

There are lots of terrific hotel accommodations throughout town, a good place to start a search is at SignOn San Diego, the visitor website is: http://sandiego.citysearch.com/section/hotels_visitors/. Another good one is the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau, http://www.sdcvb.org/.

UNI HIGH

You may have learned that, several years ago, the Diocese announced plans to eventually close Uni High and build a campus in North County. The new campus is tentatively to be named Cathedral High (ironic, isn't it?), the Uni campus will be turned over to USD for likely demolition and new facilities. The current freshman class is slated to be the last graduating class of Uni High. This may be the last time many alumni have the opportunity to visit the campus and see the facility before USDHS ceases to exist. In case you wanted to see the Uni wesite, it is http://www.usdhs.org/. We may try to see if the campus can be open for a brief period during the reunion weekend in case you'd like to see it one last time.
